Pancake day!

Shrove Tuesday is the day immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent); it is also known as Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday is a religious day of self-examination and area of life which require spiritual growth.

Pancakes are associated with this day because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

While we enjoy pancakes they are not the best for our dogs and contain some common ingredients associated with canine allergies.

Here is a quick recipe for wheat and dairy free pancakes (makes 3-4 mini pancakes)!

Basic ingredients:
½ mashed banana
½ cup oats
Additional ingredients:
Grated carrot
Grated apple (no seeds)
Berries or other favourites (e.g. blueberries, cranberries, strawberries)Method:
Add your basic ingredients into a bowl and mix well, mix in any other ingredients.

If necessary add water slowly until you have a porridge like consistency.

Use a hot, non-stick pan. Place the mixture into the pan, press into thin shapes and cook slowly, turning the heat down to avoid burning.

For best result use metal cookie cutters to shape the cakes whist cooking or cut once cooled!

Try these plain or you can also add grated carrot or their favourite berries inside or next to the pancakes for an artistic finish!

Be aware if you choose to add peanut butter, ensure it is an organic type with no sweeteners, xylitol is very dangerous to dogs!

Happy cooking!
