The wrong types of treats

A lot of dog owners like to treat their dog occasionally, and it can be difficult to resist those begging faces but too many of the wrong treats can lead to dogs becoming overweight and unhealthy. What we see as ‘table scraps’ and ‘tit bits’ are substantially more for our dogs whatever size they are and the calories can soon add up if fed alongside a balanced diet. Different ‘human’ foods can interfere with the balance of nutrients in a complete food and in turn result in heath and digestive issues.

We have created a list of common ‘treats’ that dog owners like to give their dogs, and calculated the average amount of calories in each.

  • 1 slice of cheddar cheese – 113 calories.
  • 85g meat trimmings – 177 calories.
  • 1 large scrambled egg – 91 calories (with nothing else added!)
  • Buttered toast crust – 70 calories.
  • 1 plain digestive biscuit – 71 calories.
  • 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter – 188 calories.
  • 1 pigs ear – 184 calories.

As you can see, even for the smallest amounts the calories in each treat can soon add up. If you still want to give your dog an occasional treat, there are some great healthy options that they will enjoy equally. We have listed the average calories in each to compare.

  • 1 Natural Dog Food Treat – 8 calories.
  • 1 medium carrot – 25 calories.
  • 1 Broccoli stalk – 11 calories.
  • 30g cooked salmon – 33 calories.
  • 30g cooked chicken breast – 41 calories.
  • 1 raw chicken wing – 43 calories.
  • 50g of apple – 26 calories.

With any treat, it is important to deduct the amount from the dog’s daily food allowance. For example, our treats can make up to 15% of a dog’s daily allowance but the kibble needs to be cut down. Feeding in addition can cause weight gain.
